I find it interesting that Barack Obama has chosen the medium of Text message to announce his vice presidential canitidate. I think back to the most important announcements I have heard, or made myself in my lifetime. When I decided to marry my wife, I didn’t send a text message to my parents or hers to tell them. When I decided what college to go to, no text message involved. When my best friend came out of the closet, no text message involved.
Barack Obama is doing a great job at using his celebrity power to conjure votes. I was partially interested in his campaign until he decided to use Paris Hilton as a cheerleader. Paris Hilton? come on. What meaningful thing has she brought to the table since her birth? not to mention the fact that Oprah , Robert DeNiro, who appeared today with Obama at a New Jersey rally, Kerry Washington, Usher, Chris Rock, Brendan Routh, Kate Walsh, Kal Penn and Tate Donovan speaking on Obama’s behalf. Voters in California are getting phone calls from Ed Norton and Alfre Woodard; caucus-goers in Colorado might hear from Forest Whitaker. Enrique Marciano, who stars in CBS’s Without a Trace, is campaigning for Obama with Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. Minnesotans might be shocked to see Scarlett Johansson knocking at their door.
You must begg the question, Do my values parallel these peoples values? outside of their celebrity fame, would you want to support something standing next to Usher while he is singing about getting another girl pregnant that he didn’t even love?
Celebrities are just another gimic that Mr. Obama is using to trick you into your vote. Think of other gimics that you have fallen for. Some of mine include: Pet Rocks, invisible dogs, getyourfreeipodhere.com, bad luck emails, the list goes on. So, consider text messages, celebrities, and barack as your facebook/myspace friend, and then say “no, I am going to vote on the issues.” and text barack back and tell him that.
Have a good day.
